Calling all musicians searching for a friendly, all-ages, music-making environment!
Community Band is an ongoing community music project directed by Logan Hone and presented by Art in the Park & Neighborhood Music School which aims to provide a fulfilling community music experience which continually lowers barriers to entry.
Musicians of all skill levels, ages, & backgrounds are invited to join in each week in learning an eclectic mix of music, including jazz, latin, folk, improvised, & original material.
Participation is FREE! Come anytime. Bring your instrument and water. Percussion instruments are provided. We play with sheet music (usually leadsheet style charts with chords written above the melody notes) but if you aren't comfortable reading we will help, or you can play by ear, or jam on percussion, or just come to listen and enjoy a beautiful afternoon in the park!
The band meets most Saturdays, 11am-1pm at Hermon Park (part of the Arroyo Seco, Los Angeles) in conjunction with a Community Arts class, resulting in a wonderfully positive, creative, & family-friendly atmosphere. It's truly such a beautiful Saturday in the park.
This project originally started in 2016 at Logan's home and joined forces with Art in the Park in 2018. Ever since, the band has jammed most Saturdays as well as presented free public concerts, including a 1939 themed concert which celebrated Art in the Park’s building, initially a FDR New Deal lawn bowling club.
During the pandemic lockdown, Community Band experimented with virtual Zoom jams, monthly remote recording projects, and a group improvisation video. A compilation album called Quarantined but Still Jammin'! documents these experiments in remote community music.
